Borno State House of Assembly yesterday sacked its majority leader, Hon Idrissa Jidda.
LEADERSHIP gathered that Jidda’s removal might not be unconnected
with his alleged closeness to former Borno State Governor Ali Modu
Sheriff.
The former majority leader was removed for announcing the defection
the defection of 18 state lawmakers, including himself from of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
without consulting the majority members.
Jidda, who shares the same local government with Modu Sheriff, had on
July 21 boasted that the majority members of the Assembly would be
defecting to the PDP in support of Modu Sheriff, who reportedly declared
his exit from the APC to the PDP.
Apparently displeased with the majority leader’s action and his
loyalty, the ruling APC leadership in the state was said to have
approached its members in the Assembly to ensure the replacement of
Jidda.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP, the new majority leader, Hon Zakariya
Muhammed said his emergence as the new leader of the APC majority in the
Assembly was sequel to the defection of the ousted former majority
leader.
He said, “Hon Jidda had on July 21 declared in the media that 19
members of the House had defected to the PDP. And we all know we had
only 22 members of the APC. So we felt he made such declaration without
consulting us; he spoke on his own and as far as the Borno state house
of Assembly is concerned, no one has defected.
“If he insists on being a PDP, then he cannot be the leader. That was
why the leaders of our party who have the powers of deciding who
becomes the leader said a replacement must be made from the Borno
Central and every member, including the speaker agreed that I should be
the majority leader, having met all the requirements as a member from
Borno Central”.
