The company also launched its mobile devices, the StarTimes P40 mobile smartphone and P80 hybrid smartphone/ tablet.
Announcing the new products, in Abuja, managing director, NTA-Star TV Enterprises, Mr Maxwell Loko, said that it was different from the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) as StarSat uses ‘Direct-To-Home’ (DTH) technology which enables better sound and picture quality to be transmitted digitally to a wider range of people at lesser cost than the DTT technology.
“As Nigeria looks forward to 2015 deadline for the digital transition, the launch of StarSat is another momentum for the Nigerian Television industry,” Loko said.
He stressed that StarSat was not out to take the place of StarTimes but to complement it to actualise easy access to digital television by most, if not all Nigerians.
According to him, StarSat comes with a package of over 100 channels with more channels in high definition. It also comes with a portable decoder and satellite dish and boots faster than any other digital satellite TV.
Loko said the decoder and satellite dish currently comes at a promo price of N12,600 , with three months free subscription of the premium bouquet which offers over 100 channels.
