Prominent leaders from 12 local governments in Orlu zone of Imo
State have rejected the All Progressives Congress (APC) and endorsed
President Goodluck Jonathan as their sole candidate for the 2015
presidential race.Rising from a meeting of stakeholders from the zone
last Friday, they also passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of
Senator Hope Uzodinma, representing Imo West in the National Assembly.
The stakeholders, who converged on Omuma, Oru East Local Government
Area of the state, set up a committee to come up with a position paper
on what should be the stand of the zone on the Imo governorship seat and
to also determine whether Orlu zone should contest for the seat or
support another zone.
The leaders, who cut across party lines, said they were rejecting the APC because it lacked national spread and can neither accommodate, protect nor defend the interest of the South-east people with particular focus on that of the Orlu people.
They reasoned that a vote for the APC would amount to a willful alienation of the Orlu zone and South-east from the mainstream of national politics.
The stakeholders urged Orlu people and Imo residents to reject the APC completely in all the elections in 2015. They also endorsed President Jonathan for a second term in office, saying he has done well in his first tenure, which favoured the South-east in general and Orlu zone in particular.
Moving the motion for the endorsement of President Jonathan and rejection of the APC, a prominent leader and elder statesman from the zone, Chief S.O Ukadike, argued that President Jonathan had done well and deserves a second term.
He said the APC could not be an alternative to PDP, as it lacked national spread and was incapable of protecting the interest of the South-east.
Ukadike called for the total rejection of the APC, even as his motion, which was put to vote, was unanimously adopted by the stakeholders.
Chairman of Orlu Zone Elders Council, Mr. P. C. Mgbenwelu, also moved the motion for a vote of confidence in the leadership of Senator Uzodinma, as the political leader of Orlu zone and senator, representing Imo West Senatorial district.
In his motion, which was unanimously adopted and seconded by Chief Nnachebe Ojike, from Ideato Federal constituency, Mgbenwelu said that Imo West zone has never had it so well.
Earlier in his address, Uzodinma reminded Orlu people that God has blessed them with 12 local governments and a majority population in Imo State.
He enjoined them to make the best use of such advantages, saying that Orlu people must assert their might to be recognised and duly accorded the respect she deserves in the state.
Uzodinma said he was prepared to subsume his personal interest into that of the larger Orlu zone, which he said is higher than that of an individual.
