Nations Cup 2015: S/Africa calls up 34-man squad for Eagles

South Africa coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba has announced a squad of 34 players to contest the upcoming Afcon 2015 qualifying games against the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Sudan.
Mashaba, who took over from former coach Gordon Igesund, has named his first squad since taking over the reigns to coach the Afcon 1996 winners.
There was a few shocks as the likes of Kermit Erasmus, Teko Modise, Kathlego Mphela, Thulani Serero and May Mahlangu were all omitted from the squad while Bernard Parker and Simphiwe Tshabalala are out injured.
However, the squad still has a few of the regulars, like first choice goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, Thabo Matlaba and Anele Ngcongca.
Twenty-five players will be available for the first game while the eight on the reserve standby list will link up with the rest of the squad after the Sudan game to prepare for the Super Eagles clash. South Africa will travel to Khartoum to face Sudan for their first group game on September 5, before hosting the Super Eagles five days later in Cape  Town.
Though, Shakes says he has not yet decided who will captain Bafana Bafana going into the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers,
it is expected that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune who had been wearing the armband during Gordon Igesund’s reign may retain it.
