Attack on Edo lawmaker: Police quiz speaker, majority leader, others

The police in Benin have interrogated Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Uyi Igbe, the Majority Leader of the House, Philip Shaibu and three others over Tuesday night attack on the lawmaker representing Etsako West 1 Constituency, Mr. Rasaq Momoh.
The speaker, Shaibu and another lawmaker, Folly Ogedegbe, it was gathered, were invited by the state Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo.
The lawmakers and their colleagues, who thronged the police command headquarters yesterday in solidarity were still there at the time of filing this report.
However, the Commissioner of Police confirmed to Daily Sun yesterday that five persons had been held in connection with the attack on the state lawmaker.
Thugs attacked Momoh, whose seat was declared vacant by the House in July, after he defied the instruction of security men at the House of Assembly quarters not to enter the quarters by scaling the perimeter fence.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has also invited the speaker and Shaibu to appear before it in Abuja on Monday.
The reason for their invitation was not clear, but the Action Congress of Nigeria (APC) raised the alarm over alleged plot by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government to incarcerate all loyalists of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
