LCCI decries delay in registration of businesses by CAC

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI has expressed concern over the frustrations faced by investors in the course of business incorporation.

The Chamber in its communiqué after its meeting held last week and signed by its Director General, Muda Yusuff stated “Rather than live up to the high expectations of better service delivery promised few months ago, the quality of service at the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC has deteriorated. Rather than take the promised 24 hours, business incorporation now takes well over one week in most cases.  A major component of the Ease of Doing Business Report of the World Bank is the ease of business registration.

The performance on this score is not satisfactory. Council urged the management of the CAC to urgently fix these shortcomings to realise the dream of making the country a leading investment destination in Africa.”

In its comments on the construction of Lagos Badagry Expressway, the LCCI said “ We welcome the proposal by the federal government to partner with the Lagos State Government to ensure the speedy completion of the reconstruction work of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.  This collaboration is long overdue.  There is tremendous wisdom in allowing national development concerns to take precedence over partisan considerations at all times.

The Lagos Badagry road is very strategic, not just for the development of the country, but the facilitation of trade between Nigeria and other countries in the West African sub region.  Over 70 per cent of freight and human movements between Nigeria and countries in the sub region take place on this corridor.  Its current deplorable state is thus taking a huge toll on economic activities in the country and the sub region.”

The Council of the LCCI further calls on the Lagos and Federal Government to urgently development a partnership framework to accelerate the completion of the reconstruction work on the road.  It is in the interest of the Nigerian economy, the ECOWAS economic integration aspirations and the welfare of millions of citizens resident on this corridor to do so.

On the political transition of the country, the LCCI said “As the 2015 elections approaches, the LCCI Council reiterated the importance of peace in the transition process. Without peace very little economic activity will take place and it is the citizens that will bear the brunt.

The LCCI Council is disturbed by the recent disturbances and assault on the Judiciary in Ekiti State. This is clearly not a good omen. The LCCI therefore calls on the major organs of government especially the law enforcement agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission to redouble their efforts in ensuring a peaceful democratic transition.

On the issue of Ebola virus disease, the LCCI Council commended the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government for the effectiveness of their containment strategies on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), which saved the country the risk of a major epidemic.

The Council further applauded the spirit of collaboration that prevailed between the Lagos state and federal government in this regard.  It was gratifying to note that the overriding objective of dealing with a major public health issue was placed far and above partisan considerations.  The LCCI hopes that this would be replicated in other spheres of governance activities.
