UNILAG VC, others welcome campus baby

  • Mum rushed to UNILAG clinic during doctor’s strike
Shouts of joy erupted at the University of Lagos Kestington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation Maternity and Laboratory Centre (KMLC) recently, following the birth of a baby girl, weighing 2.5kg.
On hand to welcome the first ‘campus’ baby to be delivered at the centre were the Vice Chancellor, Prof Rahamon Ade Bello, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Research), Prof. Babajide Alo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Duro Oni, the Registrar, Dr. Taiwo F. Ipaya, and the Bursar, Mr. Lateef A. Odekunle.
The medical doctor, Dr. Chioma Nwokocha and Grace Ugwu the midwife who carried out the delivery, with the full support of the entire centre’s staff expressed their joy and appreciation on the safe delivery. According to the midwife, the patient was not among the registered patients of the centre but came to the centre as a result of the effort of the staff to promote the world-class facilities of the centre to expectant mothers.
Ugwu said the patient rushed to the centre from General Hospital, Randle Surulere, when she could not get medical attention due to the nationwide strike embarked upon by medical doctors. She assured members of the public of the readiness of the centre to render quality and excellent service.
Doctor Nwokocha said the entrance of the patient to the centre in the earlier hours of Friday, July 4, brought great joy to the centre and showcased the centre’s professionalism in handling maternal cases. She said they deployed the world class equipment in the centre to ensure the safe delivery of the baby.
The mother of the new-born baby, Esther Akanbi, described the centre as a mother’s delight, a haven for delivery of babies. She was full of praise for the excellent services she received and expressed profound gratitude for a job well done.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bello, who led other management staff of the university to welcome the baby, expressed his joy. He congratulated the couple, describing the baby as ‘UNILAG baby’ as he presented the mother and baby with gift.
