Voters registration: Mimiko calls for deadline extension

Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has stressed the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the period of the on-going voters registration exercise in the state following complaints against the execution of the exercise.
Governor Mimiko made the call in order not to disenfranchise the people after he was confronted with various complaints, made by eligible voters and protests against the execution of the exercise during a monitoring tour on Friday.
Mimiko had visited some registration centres in the state capital, Akure, in company with government officials and the state’s INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Akin Orebiyi.
At the St. Stephen Primary School Oke –Ijebu poling unit for instance, fears were raised about the lean chance of about two million eligible voters in the unit to register as over 2000 people were waiting unattended to by 10.00am because of the bad state of the registration machine.
The officer in charge at the poling unit said the registration exercise started by 9.00am but was only able to register 10 people in an hour.
