COAS reaffirms commitment to Army welfare

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Kenneth Tobiah Minimah has reaffirmed his com­mitment to welfare of Nigerian Army Per­sonnel. He made this known during second quarter 2014 Nigerian Army Welfare Insur­ance Scheme (NAWIS) Board of Directors (BOD) meeting held in the Headquarters 82 Di­vision, NA Enugu.
The COAS who spoke through the Group Man­aging Director (GMD) of the Nigerian Army Wel­fare Limited and Guar­antee and Chairman of NAWIS (BOD) Major General Bitrus Kwaji em­phasised that welfare and training are the motivat­ing factors for any mili­tary force.
The GMD who in his opening remarks stated that the NA will continue to provide the best wel­fare for its officers and men to achieve the de­sired vision and mission of the COAS. He further said that this meeting has become necessary for us to meet on quarterly ba­sis because of NAWIS direct involvement in the operation that is current­ly ongoing in the North East, where the needs to review the operations and activities of the NAWIS become very important.
NAWIS involves di­rectly because we have to make payments im­mediately to the families of the decease personnel that unfortunately been victims of ongoing opera­tion against the terrorists. General Kwaji therefore urged the members to come up with more pro­active measures in order to re-strategies to meet the challenges. He also advised the members to be open-minded while deliberating in this con­ference.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the NAWIS Colonel SS Jiya informed the conference that the agency has worked as­siduously to improve the existing welfare services in the NA, which includ­ed the reduction of the suffering of officers, sol­diers and their dependants in the events of sudden death, killed in action, retirement and permanent disabilities, as well as motivating services per­sonnel in the discharge of their duties, especially those serving in the op­eration in the North East against the terrorists.
