FEARS about the health of former military head of state General Ibrahim Babangida have intensified over the weekend after he extended his stay in a German hospital by a further two weeks.
On September 6, General Babangida left Nigeria, accompanied by his second son Aminu, for what his aides described as a routine medical check-up. However, he has spent over two weeks in hospital and his planned return yesterday has now been postponed for a further fortnight.
Yesterday, one of the general's aides said that he extended his stay by two weeks on the orders of his doctors, to enable him have enough rest. He tried to dismiss suggestions that his boss was terminally ill, adding that his health is not threatened.
“It is true that oga has postponed his return date from Germany. He was expected yesterday but we learnt his doctors asked him to stay behind for some observation.
“Since he left for a routine two-week medical check-up we have been in regular contact with him. We speak with him every day and he is in a good frame of mind and in good health,” the aide added.
General Babangida ruled Nigeria between 1985 and 1993, during which he spent a month in an American hospital in Paris to treat a recurring foot problem. He sustained severe injuries to his spinal cord and foot during the Nigerian Civil War which continued to plague him afterwards.
President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to make a detour on his current overseas trip to go to Germany to visit General Babangida. Currently in London, President Jonathan is due to fly to New York for the United Nations General Assembly gathering.
