Managing Director of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Dr. Jamil Gwamna, has predicted that the power sector in Nigeria would soon displace the oil industry as the major driver of the nation’s economy.
He spoke on Monday in Kano during an induction course for newly recruited staff of KEDCO at a ceremony with a total of 350 participants in attendance. He regretted that more than any other negative factor, Kano was dislodged as an economic power due to the problems of lack of power supply witnessed in the state and its environs in the last few years.
He expressed the company’s desire to reverse the trend and provide 24 hours power supply to the people of the state. Gwamna recalled that Kano was first connected to the national grid during the colonial era, adding that the company has an area of operation covering Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states.
These states, he noted, have a population of over 19 million people with a household size of over five million while adding that their marked area is over 50,000 square kilometers while the network size of the states is in excess of over 25,000 to 30,000 kilometers
With this statistics, the KEDCO boss stressed that the potential of the company was encouraging but cautioned that the only limitation was its ability to realise these potentials.
He pledged that the company would partner with world-class ICT companies and would in no time engineer an ICT dependent environment for its services, even as he hinted of the firm’s intention to invest in the procurement of meters and allied materials that would make it difficult for illegal connectors to access power.
He charged them to key into the transformational agenda of KEDCO and to ensure that the set goals are realised.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of KEDCO, Alhaji Tajudeen Aminu Dantata, explained that they are 11 companies that were licensed by the government, adding that their vision was to be the best among equals.
He implored them to work hard, noting that, “you are here because you are qualified and because we think that you can contribute to the vision of the company.”
He assured that they would spare no amount to train them to the highest levels, but stressed that they would not hesitate to unburden anybody, who deviates from the collective goal.
