INEC’s independence must not be compromised by politicians –Saraki

A head of the 2015 general elections, former governor of Kwara State and the senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain its credibility by being independent of any political group or party.
A statement signed by Senator Saraki and made available to journalists in Ilorin yesterday, said issues on cancelation of the newly proposed polling units being created across the country must be the operational decision of INEC as an independent organisation and not that of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters or that of an individual.
“With due respect to the Chairman of Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Andy Uba, who is my good friend, we as politicians must allow the INEC to remain an independent body and not to interfere in a situation that will compromise the electoral body and its operational system.
“I also believe that INEC has power and authority to carry out such operational exercise under the law that established it. I also urge the INEC to ensure it puts in more effort to ensure that the 2015 elections instill confidence and trust in the system and above all, ensure  that the election merges the best on ground of transparency, independence and fairness.”
“In the last few years, Nigeria’s electoral process has been witnessing salient but developmental changes; to a high level, candidates and the electorate are certain that elections will be won based on votes cast and counted legally and according to the rules.
“This is a development that we must sustain and commend INEC under the leadership of Professor Attahiru Jega.
“This development does not only give confidence and hope to the electorate, it also compels political office holders and stakeholders in the polity to embrace a new dawn of electoral system; these are good developments for our democracy as a nation.
“It has been seen in recent elections like Osun State election where the voices of the people were heard through their votes.”
