Synagogue tragedy: Death toll hits 44

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said the death toll in the guesthouse located within the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in the Ikotun area of Lagos has risen to 44, while 130 have so far been rescued alive. This was contained in a text message the NEMA South-West Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, sent to Daily Sun. The building collapsed on Friday as construction work was going on.
According to Farinloye, the guesthouse collapsed because it was originally a two-storey building but was being raised to five. “The additional three were being constructed when it collapsed at about 1p.m last Friday afternoon.  The church members have been very aggressive and tried attacking emergency responders. So far, 44 have been confirmed dead while 130 have been rescued,” he said.
But the church insisted that a ‘strange’ airplane was seen flying over the building some minutes before it collapsed.
According to the General Overseer of the church, Prophet T. B. Joshua, the circumstances leading to the collapse of the building could be linked to a suspected airplane that allegedly flew over the building some minutes before it came down.
Joshua said:“As I was praying on Friday, they came to call me saying that there was an aeroplane hovering over the church. They said it was too close to the building and flew as if it wanted to land. After about 30 minutes, it came on top of the building. It came the first, second, third and fourth time, then after some minutes, the building collapsed.”
