The Federal Government has expressed sympathy with the victims of
Wednesday’s attack on the Federal College of Education, Kano, pledging
to strengthen security arrangement in educational institutions in the
country.This was just as two more students of the college died yesterday
in the hospital.Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, gave
the pledge when he led Federal Government’s delegation to the college on
sympathy visit.
He said: “We see this (the attack) as yet another challenge to further go back to the drawing board to evolve additional strategies to protect the lives and property of the young ones in our midst.”
He stated that it was unfortunate that institutions of learning had become targets of attacks.
The minister said security of lives and property was everybody’s business, including the government and the governed and charged every Nigerian to pay attention to security issues.
Shekarau, on behalf of the Federal Government, sympathised with the families of the victims as well as the staff and management of the institution over the loss of lives of innocent students.
“We also wish to sympathize with the wounded that are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. We also sympathise with the entire community of this institution, who have been traumatised by this incident.
“It is our prayers that Allah, in his infinite mercy, will bless the souls of the departed ones, grant them peace in the hereafter and grant their families the strength and the fortitude to bear this great loss,” he said.
The delegation, which was received by the Provost of the college, Dr. Rabi Mohammed and the management staff, included the former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, the former governor of Kebbi State, Senator Adamu Aleiro, Senator Bashir Lado and the Secretary to the National Commission of Colleges of Education, Prof. Mohammed Junaid.
Meanwhile, two more students died yesterday morning at the Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital in Kano bringing the death toll to 17 civilians and two suspected insurgents.
