Boko Haram captures another town

Scores killed as insurgents overrun Michika, others in Adamawa Two days after Boko Haram overran Gulak community and its environs in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa, another major town, Michika, also in the state, fell to the insurgents yesterday.
Residents who escaped, said scores of people were massacred. Many who fled Gulak and sought refuge in Michika fell victims to the terrorists. This is even as President Goodluck Jonathan would meet with his Chadian counterpart, Idrisa Deby in Ndjamena today to discuss the way forward as regards insurgency.
Meanwhile, there was pandemonium in the northern senatorial district of Adamawa State yesterday as Boko Haram continued to surge toward Michika which the terrorists overran.
Some residents told Daily Sun on phone that they fled the town to escape the attack. According to a source, soldiers were still fighting to repel the attack as at the time of filing this report yesterday, adding that the insurgents took over control of Michika town Sunday morning, just two days after capturing Gulak town which had a large presence of soldiers.
An escapee and a Michika resident told Daily Sun in Yola that the insurgents killed many residents, fearing that over 100 may have been shot dead. Hundreds were separated from their families. “They killed several of my friends, they rounded dozens of young people, lay them on the ground and slit their throats while the elderly were shot at close range”.
He said the pandemonium has hit Uba, Maraararba Mubi and Mubi towns with residents, including thousands of displaced persons from Gwoza, Izige, Damboa, Mdagali and Gulak fleeing amid scarcity of commercial vehicles at motorparks. A civil servant, who doesn’t want to be named, said many residents were headed for remote villages and other settlement areas south, in the direction of Yola, the state capital. The Army Public Relations Officer of the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola, Capt. Jafaru Nuhu, could not be reached for comments. Also, efforts to reach the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, were not successful at press time.
In a related development, President Jonathan will today hold talks with Deby in Ndjamena, The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said in a statement that it was in continuation of the Federal Government’s efforts to forge a stronger alliance against terrorism and violent extremism with Nigeria’s neighbours.
The talks with Deby, who is also the current Chairman of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, follows their discussions in Nairobi , Kenya last week on the sidelines of the African Union Peace and Security Council Summit. Both leaders will discuss the further actualization of agreements for greater co-operation against terrorists reached by Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon at a meeting in Paris earlier this year.
Their talks are expected to lead to the strengthening of the Paris Accord on joint border patrols, intelligence sharing and the prevention of the illicit movement of terrorists, criminals, arms and ammunition across shared borders.
Before returning to Abuja tomorrow, President Jonathan, who will be accompanied by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), the Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Sheidu Mohammed, will be a Special Guest of Honour at an international conference on Information Technology and Communication holding in Ndjamena same day.
