FIFA sticks to Sept 4 election

Sends observers to Abuja
.Giwa meets brick wall over explanation letter

World soccer governing body, FIFA has endorsed the decision of the Interim Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to  conduct the election of September 4 in Abuja.
Although FIFA had last Friday expressed worries over the nearness of the date in a letter it sent to the NFF, the world soccer body confirmed yesterday that her officials will be storming Abuja  tomorrow to observe the election.
A FIFA source disclosed exclusively to Daily Sunsports that a member of the Associations and Development Division of FIFA, Govaro Brimo would lead the FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) observers that would be monitoring the election.
“As we speak, Brimo has secured his visa and would arrive Abuja tomorrow to be part of the election. CAF is also sending another team of observers,” our source disclosed.
We further gathered that factional leader of NFF, Chris Giwa might have met a brick wall in his bid to explain his position to FIFA, as he could not get either Secretary General, Musa Amadu or Aminu Maigari to sign the letter that would have been dispatched to Zurich.
Our source pointed out that FIFA would only consider a letter signed by the duo since they remain those recognised by FIFA.
“Agreed Maigari has resigned, as far as FIFA is concerned, his resignation would only start counting after an elective congress has taken place. FIFA made it clear that the August 26 congress would not be an elective one, but one that would come up with a road map on the way forward for Nigerian football and that is why they have not endorsed what ever election that took place on that day,” our source explained.
It would be noted that NFF’s head of media Demola Olajire had in a release last Friday assured that NFF would convince FIFA to recognize Giwa’s board when it explains its position in a letter that would have been dispatched to Zurich yesterday.
“We have seen the letter from FIFA and digested the full content of it. Nothing has changed, as far as we are concerned. We will present our position to FIFA by Monday morning (yesterday)and they will be convinced beyond any reasonable doubt.
“We call on Nigerians not to panic. The NFF is not intimidated and we do not expect any sanction because we have done the appropriate thing. For us, it is not about noise -making. FIFA has admitted in its letter that the General Assembly is the highest decision –making body of any association/federation. That is perfect,” Olajire quoted Giwa as saying.
