Fresh Ebola scare at Lagos airport

OAU student tests negative
A female passenger, who came into Nigeria aboard an Royal Air Maroc (Moroccan Airline) was yesterday isolated and driven off in an ambulance out of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos over suspected Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The suspect was identified as Folswe Elizabeth Maria. A Port Health Services official told reporters that the suspect was a transit passenger who came into the country from Morocco. According to the source, the passenger had passed through all Immigration and health processes. She was moved to the transit lounge of the terminal to have some drinks.
The source, who doesn’t want to be named, said it was at the drinking lounge that the woman went to the toilet, fell ill and drew the attention of the port health personnel.
“Immediately the personnel at the airport screened her with the infrared thermometer, it was confirmed that the transit passenger had a high temperature, one of the symptoms of Ebola,” he said.
“She was instantly isolated and driven out of the airport by one of the ambulances stationed at the place by the Port Health Services personnel.”
Daily Sun could not, however, confirm if the woman was actually infected with the EVD or of other diseases which might have forced her to fall ill. The exact location where she was taken to could also not be confirmed at press time.
Officials of the Port Health Services declined comments on the issue, insisting that only the Federal or Lagos State Ministries of Health can speak on the subject.
Meanwhile, Obafemi Awolowo University [OAU], Ile-Ife disclosed yesterday that its female student suspected to have contacted EVD through a secondary contact with the late Port-Hacourt-based Dr. Enemuno has tested negative.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole, said the university has set up an Ebola Surveillance Committee to prevent the spread of the deadly disease to the campus.
He said: “The clinical examination conducted on the student proved negative and the preliminary result of the test also proved negative. So, the OAU is totally free from EVD.
He assured that no student would be stigmatized as a result of the EVD, adding that the affected student will also be allowed to continue with her studies.
However, Prof. Omole informed that students from Liberia have been told not to resume yet, saying they will do that later.
