He made the promise yesterday when he paid a condolence visit to The Sun Corporate Headquarters in Lagos.
Aderanti, who assumed office yesterday as the Lagos police boss, called on members of the public who might have any useful information regarding the whereabouts of Igwe’s killer to avail the police of such information.
Speaking of his visit, he said: “This is neither a courtesy visit nor a working visit; it is a visit to commiserate with you, the management and staff of The Sun Newspapers; the chairman of the board and the Guild of Editors for losing such a figure who was part and parcel of the association.
“His death is a sad loss and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had already ordered a full scale investigation into the matter. The Force PRO, CP Ojukwu has also released a statement on behalf of the IGP. So, my coming here is to reinforce that condolence letter from the force headquarters and also to represent the IGP in actually seeing you physically to express his sincere condolences.”
Still reiterating the police determination to ensure that the killer was smoked out of hiding, he said: “It is quite shocking that such a versatile editor will die in such a way. That shows the level of recklessness that some of our drivers exhibit on the road. But we are looking into it and I sincerely believe that at the end of the day, people that are responsible for this heinous crime will be brought to justice.
“I will like to use this opportunity to appeal to members of the public who may have any useful information that could lead to the arrest of the culprit to feel free and get through to the police. I know that when you see something and say something, you will be free but when you see something and say nothing, I think it will continue to haunt you.”
He promised that investigation into the late Igwe’s case would not be like those other previous investigations that were never concluded.
Appreciating the CP for his concern, the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Limited, Femi Adesina charged the police not to allow investigation into Igwe’s killer go the way of numerous unresolved investigations in the country.
He told the police boss that bringing the killer to justice would not bring Mr Igwe back to life but it would bring some sort of closure to the mystery. He also stated that tracking the killer and bringing him to justice would be a delight to the country, journalists and the Nigeria Guild of Editors as a body. He assured the CP that the late Igwe would even rest better when his killer was brought to justice.
“For us, getting this case investigated and possibly apprehending this hit-and-run driver will not bring Dimgba Igwe back, but for us as a country and as a company, it will bring some sort of closure to that mystery. There are so many prominent people that died in this country in similar circumstances; we have had a lot of vows and pledges that they will get to the bottom of it, but most of them were never unraveled. We don’t want this one to join those mysterious cases. So, it will be our delight if at the end of the day, that hit-and-run driver is arrested. It will be good for our country; it will be good for our profession as journalists and it will be good for our association as Nigeria Guild of Editors because the late Mr. Igwe was a pillar. He was a pillar in this company; he was a pillar in journalism in Nigeria and we believe that he will even rest better when that careless driver is brought to justice.”
He commended the CP for finding out time to pay a condolence visit to The Sun family on his first day in office.
“We welcome the new Lagos CP to our corporate head office. We heard of his deployment to Lagos a couple of days ago but we have also learnt that he resumed formally today. It means that on his first day in office, he is visiting us here.
“We would have loved it better if it was in a happier circumstance but he is coming to sympathise and solidarise with us on the loss of our Vice Chairman, Mr. Dimgba Igwe who passed on last Saturday. We thank you very much Mr. CP,” Adesina said. Describing the CP as a painstaking officer, he charged him to use his wealth of investigative experience to track Igwe’s killer and bring him to justice.
