The Tin Can Island Port (TCIP) Command of the Nigeria Customs Service
(NCS) says it generated a total of N21.16 billion as revenue in August
2014.A statement by the Controller of the command, Jibrin Zakari, said
the figure was lower than the N23.4 collected in July. The statement
also revealed that May and June have been the highest revenue earning
months for the command with over N26 billion. The monthly revenue
collected by the command has been oscilliating due to a combination of
factors like government policies and hectic traffic snarl, which slowed
down businesses at the Lagos ports.
The statement showed that TCIP Customs collected N21.5 billion in
January, N21.6 billion in February, N16.6 billion in March, N26.3
billion in April, N26.5 billion in May and N26.1 billion in June.
The statement also disclosed that a 40-feet container loaded with
rugs, used tyres, used clothes, shoes, vegetable oil, carpets and rice
was impounded by the command in August, adding that 15 suspects were
arrested in connection with the seizure.
In a related development, NCS Comptroller General, Abdullahi Dikko,
has extolled the Controller, officers and men of the Federal Operations
Unit, Zone A, Ikeja, for the laudable achievements since Usman Turaki
assumed office as Controller few months ago.
Dikko said the unit had made impressive mark with the seizures of
various brand new cars and other exotic vehicles, describing the feat as
 quite unprecedented and commendable.
He charged the officers/men to remain proactive in the discharge of
their official functions, while operating within the tenets of the
service.
In his response, the Controller pointed out that the successes
recorded so far was a collective effort of all officers/men of the unit
who have supported him since his assumption of duties.
He assured the CGC and his team that the unit would explore all platforms to ensure that it delivers on its mandate.
