The women were among over 1, 624 displaced persons from Damboa Local Govern- ment Area in Borno State.
The Senior Relief and Re- habilitation Officer of the National Emergency Man- agement Agency (NEMA), Gombe Operations office, Ali Kadiri Moses, gave the figures in an interview with newsmen in Bauchi.
Kadiri said: “There are a lot of pregnant women in the camp. I’m particular about a woman, who gave birth to twins and eight other pregnant women that gave birth successfully in the camp and all the babies are doing well.”
He spoke shortly after delivering a paper entitled, ‘Emergency Evacuation and Mass Sheltering for Communities Prone fo flood and Related Disasters” at a workshop organised by NEMA, Gombe Operations Office.
Kadiri said NEMA was tak- ing care of the babies, their mothers as well as the entire Internally Displayed Persons (IDPs), pointing out that their number was increasing by the day.
He stated that the daily in- crease of the IDPs posed chal- lenges to NEMA in terms of ascertaining the exact figure of the IDPs and how to even plan for their daily feeding.
He said: “At the moment, I cannot be very specific about the number of IDPs; but few weeks ago, we had 1,624 on our list and from that time till now they keep coming into the camp and we are taking good care of them.”
Kadiri thanked the Gombe State Government for pro- viding the newly built Police Quarters where NEMA camps IDPs, but complained of inad- equate teachers and appealed to qualified persons to come to the aid of pupils in the camp.
The acting Head of Opera- tions, Zainab Umar Ali urged for cooperation and effective coordination among stake- holders in disaster manage- ment both by government and non-government humanitarian organisations.
