Mass failure in WASCE: Bauchi govt to sack teachers with fake results

Following the mass failure of its candidates in the West African School Certificate Examinations (WASCE), the Bauchi State Government has vowed to carry out a verification exercise aimed at flushing out all teachers with fake results in both primary and secondary schools in the state.
The State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Aminu, dropped the hint yes- terday, in Bauchi at the end of stakeholders meeting on education to re-examine the performance of students in the last WASCE where many students failed.
Aminu said the meeting identified factors that led to the mass failure of students in examinations in the state de- spite huge investment made by the government.
He said the problems in- cluded nonchalant attitude of parents, non-commitment of the teachers, lack of ad- equate supervision, influx of over three million displaced persons into the state and un- qualified teachers that were employed in the profession among others.
The commissioner said the meeting had sent their recom- mendations to the governor, seeking his consent and ap- proval to chart the way for- ward.
He said the minimum qualification for teaching is the National Certificate of Education (NCE) but many diploma holders were em- ployed as teachers, adding that they cannot guarantee quality teaching.
Aminu said after verifica- tion, some of the unqualified teachers would be sent for training, while others would be sent to the office of the head of service for redeploy- ment to offices relevant to their courses.
