2015: Why I want to be in House of Reps –Adeyemi, Atiba LG boss

He was appointed interim chairman, Atiba Local Government, Oyo State, in 2007. In December same year, he was elected chairman of the Atiba LGA. He was re-appointed caretaker chairman in August 2011, the position he holds till today. Now he has his eyes on the National Assembly. He speaks on his mission and dream for his constituency.
At what point did you venture into politics?
I grew up in the Palace of Alaafin of Oyo. It is a place of activities including, administration, economy, social, political, cultural, etc. So, politics has been in me because of my human interaction.
I came into partisan politics in 1992/1993, courtesy of the late MKO Abiola, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, installed by my father, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who, happened to be a friend of the family.
What has been the influence of your father since then?
Tremendous. Occasionally, I do travel with my father meeting governors, presidents and other political bigwigs all over the country. I do also represent him at functions. The politics in me is at the instance of the influence of my father; using his connection, representing him and moving around with him.
You have been both an elected and appointed LG chairman, which one would you say is more powerful?
Definitely, being an elected LG chairman is more comfortable than on appointed basis. If you are elected, you have the tenure and the mandate to lead the people for a particular duration, as the constitution demands. As an elected chairman, I know that I have a mandate of three years. But if it is on appointment, the executive governor has the last say on the renewal of tenure and termination. By and large, being an elected chairman is much more comfortable than an appointed one.
Why did you decide to go for House of Representatives?
The quest for the House of Representatives was mooted by the people of Oyo Federal Constituency. From Afijo and Oyo West, people kept on bombarding me to leave the stage when the ovation is loudest. So, I felt I must draw the curtain because whatever has a beginning must have an end. The end has come and I have seen it all as far as local government administration is concerned. I have to move ahead and since the people of the four local government areas that made up my federal consituency are in support.
I am the candidate to beat and I am very bold to say that I will pick the ticket of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). And by the grace of the Almighty God, I will win the election in 2015.
People say because you are son of Alaafin, and since he influenced the ticket of the incumbent, it could be transferred to you. How do you react to this?
It keeps bothering me when people say I have the support of Alaafin of Oyo. A governor or a councillorship aspirant will need the Alaafin’s support to win, likewise a senator. Whether I am Alaafin’s son or not, I will definiely need his support to be in the House of Representatives for this constituency. I have to thank my God and our ancestors that I am Alaafin’s son. If my father could be of tremendous influence in the making of the suceessive House of Representatives members, why should my own be an exception? I do not think there is anything wrong.
You were chairman under two governors, Otunba Alao Akala and Governor Abiola Ajimobi, could you compare both administrations?
Alao-Akala government did not have round pegs in round holes in some offices. I have a lot of instances as a LG chairman and chairman of chairmen of the four local governments in Oyo. The case of the contract to renovate Atiba Hall, the fund was deducted from the four local governments. I chaired the committee as the chairman of the chairmen. Between N200million and N300million was expended on the project and till today, the Oyo metropolis has not used the hall for a single day because the contractor did a bad job. But Ajimobi put up a mechanism that would see to the standardisation of jobs. It might take time. That is why the roads he did will last long.
There has never been any governor in Oyo State coming for second term, will Ajimobi break the jinx?
Atiba Hall was the best project Akala claimed he has done for the people of Oyo. I raised the issue at the joint allocation meetings after the commisioning of the Mapo Hall. We agreed to renovate the hall, and the deduction of our funds was to be carried out. Akala came to this town with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007 to campaign and the only thing he came to show Oyo people that he has done was that Atiba Hall. Up till now, we have not been able to make use of it.
Dualization of major roads is going on in Oyo town. Ifedapo Market down to Owode phase 1, from Owode to the Palace of Alaafin of Oyo. Ajimobi is the first governor to expand the roads in Oyo town that is nearing completion. He has reconstructed so many roads, even federal roads. There are lots of developmental projects done by Ajimobi than Akala.
Based on the good jobs Ajimobi has done, he will have about 85 percent of the total vote of Oyo town in 2015. I have not seen any government parastatal under Ajimobi being invited by the anti-graft compared to the past administrations. As Atiba LG chairman, no anti-graft invited me. But when we were in PDP, I know how many times we visited anti-graft bodies.
How do you see the chances of your party at all levels in the 2915 elections?
I want to tell you that more than 150 days ago, some young schoolgirls are still missing. And one Transformation Agenda for Nigeria (TAN) and other groups are still saying that kind of government should continue. If my daughter is among them, will I come out? Millions of youths are jobless, while a minister spent hundred and millions of dollars to pay for parking a private jet in a country where there is no job.
The private vehicle purchased by another minister is more expensive than that of the Prime Minister of Britain. So, are you telling me that we are not tired of that kind of government? Enough is enough. We are in country where a former militant was being awarded bilions of dollars contract. Sovereignty of the water space of the country has been ceded to a militant. Militants that we know were smuggling petroleum products are now the ones protecting our territory. The people will speak in 2015 that they are tired of that kind government. And APC will be the alternative.
What is your word for the people of your constituency?
I want to appeal to the entire people of Oyo Federal Constitutency that having seen in me, a good performance at the local government level, they should give me their mandate to serve them at the House of Representatives come 2015, and they will not be disappointed. I will serve them diligently. I will be a good representative. I will be available, accessible and will give back to them. The ultimate power of election belongs to the people.
